DEI-EEUM students adapt toys for children with specific needs
On the 16th and 17th of December, toys adapted to children with specific needs were delivered by the Automation and Robotics Laboratory (LAR) of the Department of Industrial Electronics of the School of Engineering of the University of Minho, in Guimarães. The action had the support of the Municipality of Guimarães, through the councilor of Guimarães Social Coesão, Paula Oliveira, in addition to the spin-off botnroll.com and the Sociedade Martins Sarmento.
The 50 toys were adapted with electronic components provided by botnroll.com, thanks to the voluntary work of students from the Industrial Electronics and Computers course at UMinho, coordinated by professor Fernando Ribeiro. In addition to the impact on children, the initiative focused on community work and the involvement of young university students in actions that make a difference in the territory.
Children with special needs have difficulty using traditional toys. The few adapted toys that exist are quite expensive. Therefore, since 2006, LAR has adapted electronic toys during the Christmas season, so that they can be used by children with cerebral palsy.
